在 USB IF 發佈 USB 4 並兼容 Thunderbolt 接口的同時，Intel 宣佈即將開放 Thunderbolt 接口，讓廠商可以免費製作兼容 Thunderbolt 接口的晶片和裝置，並與 USB 4 徹底整合。
Intel 公佈的數據顯示，採用 Thunderbolt 3 接口的 Windows、macOS 和 Linux 裝置邁向 1000 萬，目前已經有超過 450 款認證設備，包括螢幕、存儲、外置顯示卡等等。今次宣佈開放 Thunderbolt 接口﹐除了可以藉最新發佈的 USB 4 普及這個接口的同時，USB 4 可以借助 Thunderbolt 3 提升傳輸速度到 40Gbps 之譜，供電功率達 100W。

Thunderbolt 是 Intel 發表的接口標準，因應與蘋果合作，過去的 Thunderbolt 1、2 接口與 Mini DisplayPort 整合，現在的 Thunderbolt 3 高度融合 USB Type-C，諸如 Mac 和最新一代 iPad Pro 產品支援 Thunderbolt 3 並兼容 USB Type-C（蘋果之為 USB-C），提供高達 40Gbps 的傳輸檔案速度，以及 USB-C 充電功能。
